Damascus, named in reverence to a biblical verse, has been a populated area since the early days of Oregon's past. It remained fairly sleepy for many of those years, but has become somewhat of a bedroom community for the nearby Portland metro area.
Our zigzagging has already brought us to one peace candle, so of course we had to stop and check out this one too. This "centennial" candle may not be as large as the one in Scapoose, but one might argue it's more realistic.
We knew that William H. Boring, the namesake of the nearby town, was buried here. The rain was coming down hard over this mossy resting ground, but we finally found his gravestone and stopped to pay our respects.
